Stephen Mitchell (1702–1764) was a Scottish tobacco manufacturer of Linlithgow who established himself in 1723. Mitchell had built a snuff mill at Waukmilton in 1741, and was succeeded in business by his son, also called Stephen Mitchell (b. 1732), who was in turn succeded by his son, again called Stephen Mitchell (1768–1820), who was in turn succeeded by a partnership of his sons Stephen Mitchell (1789–1874) and Nelson Mitchell, these being succeeded by the son of the last, another Stephen Mitchell (1847–1920). The firm of Stephen Mitchell and Son relocated to Glasgow in 1825, and would ultimately unite with other British tobacco companies in 1901 to form The Imperial Tobacco Company.
